Clinical Nephrology
Joseph Vassalotti, MD
Health Policy
Dr. Vassalotti is Clinical Professor in the Division of Nephrology. He is the current Chief Medical Officer of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). He oversees the medical operations of NKF's Kidney Early Evaluation Program, which identifies early chronic kidney disease high risk individuals. He is Co-Principal Investigator for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention demonstration project to identify individuals at high risk for CKD in the United States using state-based screening.
Miriam Chung, MD
Glomerular Diseases
Dr. Chung is Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology and Director of the Nephrology Fellowship Program. After Nephrology fellowship at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine, she completed a one-year training program in glomerular diseases at Columbia University. She is the Director of the Glomerular Disease Clinic at the ISMMS and actively participates in clinical trials in glomerular disease.
Jonathan Winston, MD
Chronic Kidney Disease and Hemodialysis
Dr. Winston is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Director of the outpatient Faculty Practice Associates Nephrology Clinic. He obtained his medical degree from George Washington University. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and fellowship in nephrology at the Mount Sinai Hospital.
Holly Koncicki, MD
Geriatrics & Palliative Medicine
Dr. Koncicki is Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology and the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. She completed both Nephrology fellowship and a one year training program in palliative medicine at ISMMS. Her clinical and research interests are focused on caring for older adults with chronic kidney disease. She currently serves as a Wellness Champion for the Department of Medicine.
Matthew Abramson, MD
Onco-Nephrology
Dr. Abramson is an Assistant Professor of Medicine who joined the faculty of Mount Sinai after completing an Onco-Nephrology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at SUNY-Stony Brook and a general Nephrology fellowship at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine.
Priya Deshpande, MD
Onco-Nephrology
Dr. Deshpande is an Associate Professor of Medicine board-certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. She obtained her medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and her fellowship in Nephrology at Mount Sinai.
Amanda Dijanic Zeidman, MD
Critical Care Nephrology
Dr. Zeidman is an Assistant Professor with joint appointments in the Division of Nephrology and the Institute for Critical Care Medicine at Mount Sinai. She completed Internal Medicine Residency at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai/Elmhurst Hospital Center followed by dual training in Nephrology and Critical Care Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Joji Tokita, MD
Quality Improvement, Kidney Biopsy
Dr. Tokita is the Clinical Director of the Division of Nephrology and Associate Professor of Medicine. He completed both Internal Medicine Residency and Nephrology Fellowship at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Dr. Tokita leads quality improvement initiatives for the Division and the Kidney Biopsy Service.
Physician-Scientists
John Cijiang He, MD, PhD
Dr. He is the chief of Nephrology at Mount Sinai Health System and the Arthur Fishberg endowed chair of Nephrology. He was the President of the New York Society of Nephrology and the President of Chinese American Society of Nephrology. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation. He has been funded by multiple NIH and VA grants and has published more than 180 papers in the peer-reviewed scientific journals. His major research areas include glomerular cell biology, systems biology of kidney disease, and kidney fibrosis.
Kirk Campbell, MD
Dr. Campbell is Professor in the Division of Nephrology, Co-Director of the Division T32 research training grant, and Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Department of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He leads an NIH-funded research program focused on understanding the mechanism of podocyte injury in the progression of proteinuric kidney diseases and actively participates in clinical trials in glomerular disease.
Lili Chan, MD, MSCR
Dr. Chan is Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology and Clinical Director of the BioMe Phenomics Center in the Charles Bronfman Institute for Personalized Medicine at the ISMMS. She is a clinical researcher who focuses on identifying non-traditional risk factors for adverse outcomes in patients on dialysis. She is also active in Nephrology education and mentors several fellows’ research projects.
Steven Coca, DO, MS
Dr. Coca is Professor of Medicine and Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Nephrology. He also serves as the Associate Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Medicine at ISMMS. He has been an active investigator in three large NIH-funded consortiums: the Translational Research in Biomarker Endpoints in Acute Kidney Injury (TRIBE-AKI) consortium; the Assessment, Serial Evaluation, and Subsequent Sequelae in Acute Kidney Injury (ASSESS-AKI) consortium; and the CKD Biomarkers Consortium.
Dinushika Mohottige, MD, MPH
Dr. Mohottige is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Institute of Health Equity Research at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Division of Nephrology. She received an MPH in Health Behavior/Health Education from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and completed Internal Medicine/Chief Residency and Nephrology training at Duke University. She engages in patient and community-centered, inequity-focused research around the impact of socio-structural factors/racialized medicine on kidney health and kidney transplantation.
Home Dialysis
Jaime Uribarri, MD
Dr. Uribarri is Professor in the Division of Nephrology and Director of both the Nephrology Ambulatory Clinic and Home Dialysis Program as the ISMMS. He is also the Co-Director of the Home Dialysis Fellowship Program. His main areas of research have been on acid-base and fluid and electrolytes disorders as well as nutrition in chronic kidney disease and patients with diabetes.
Shuchita Sharma, MD
Dr. Sharma is Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology and Co-Medical Director of the Home Dialysis Program and Home Dialysis Fellowship Program at the ISMMS. She completed Nephrology fellowship at ISMMS Her research interests include outcomes in patients on peritoneal dialysis.
Medical Education
Staci Leisman, MD
Dr. Leisman is Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology and medical director of a large, nursing home affiliated dialysis unit in East Harlem. Within the medical school, she is Co-Director of the Curriculum and Director of both the Human Physiology course and Introduction to Internship Course.
Tonia Kim, MD
Dr. Kim is an Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology and Director of the Pathophysiology and Pharmacology Course at the ISMMS. She is the director of the 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring Program as well as both inpatient and outpatient Nephrology electives for medical students and residents.
Samira Farouk, MD, MSCR
Dr. Farouk is Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology, and transplant nephrologist. Her research interests include medical education, innovative medical education tools, and pathogenetic mechanisms of kidney fibrosis. She serves as Social Media Director for the Division and Quality Improvement Leader. She is a member of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) Media and Communications Committee.
