Message from the Program Director
The Cardiovascular Training Program at Mount Sinai Hospital of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is one of the premier cardiovascular training programs in the country and is ranked the #4 Best Cardiovascular and Heart Surgery Program by U.S. News and World Report.
Our mission is to train future leaders in clinical cardiac practice and cardiovascular research. To achieve our mission, we have designed a leading educational program for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, in the heart of New York City. Our program has the size, expertise, and flexibility to individualize training to match each fellow’s interests, skill sets, and long-term career goals.
The Mount Sinai Hospital was founded in 1853 and has been one of the leading institutions in the treatment of cardiovascular disease from its inception. The program has been led by pioneers and luminaries in the field including Drs. Arthur Master (stress testing), Charles Friedberg (clinical cardiology), Simon Dack (founding editor of both American Journal of Cardiology and Journal of American College of Cardiology), and Richard Gorlin (pioneer in cardiac hemodynamics). We are privileged that Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, is the current President of Mount Sinai Heart and Physician-in-Chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital. - He is the immediate past editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) which has the leading impact factor of any cardiology publication and the lead editor of Fuster and Hurst’s The Heart Textbook of Cardiology. In January 2023, Dr. Deepak Bhatt, MD, MPH, a top expert in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology, joined Mount Sinai as the Director of Mount Sinai Heart and the Dr. Valentin Fuster Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Additionally, Dr. Samin Sharma began his new role as the new Director of the Mount Sinai Clinical Cardiovascular Institute. Along with his new appointment, Dr. Sharma maintained his various leadership positions within the Mount Sinai Health System, including Director of Interventional Cardiology and Senior Vice President of Operations and Quality for Mount Sinai Heart.
Because our renowned leaders have expertise in every subspecialty in cardiology and because of our cutting edge technology, we are a major referral center not only for the Sinai Health system’s 10 hospitals, but a national and international referral site generating a tremendous volume of routine as well as complex and diverse clinical challenges.
Cardiology fellows at Mount Sinai Heart are encouraged to build academic careers as experts in their areas of interest. The core curriculum includes regular journal clubs, grand rounds, seminars on research methods, and panel discussions with visiting leaders. Fellows receive personalized mentorship on a regular basis with Martin Goldman MD, as well as from Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Deepak Bhatt, MD, MPH, and Samin Sharma, MD. Fellows also interact regularly with thought leaders, including Drs. Gregg Stone, Jonathan Halperin, Donna Mancini, Vivek Reddy, Roxana Mehran, George Dangas, and Annapoorna Kini.
