Why Choose Mount Sinai?
The overall goal of our fellowship is to train our fellows to be superb academic clinicians in Sleep Medicine over a 12-month period of time, and to prepare them to be the next generation of leaders in academic sleep medicine. During the fellowship, fellows will advance their knowledge in sleep medicine, be able to develop a comprehensive plan to screen, diagnose and treat sleep disorders and have an advanced understanding of conducting sleep studies, scoring and interpreting polysomnograms, and other diagnostic testing unique to sleep medicine. Our clinical program has 11 sleep laboratory beds at three locations in Manhattan and we do over 4800 sleep studies a year (in lab and home combined). Our research program is NIH funded with over 3 million dollars per year in direct costs. Our clinical sleep providers consist of adult and pediatric sleep faculty with diverse backgrounds (pulmonary, pediatrics, neurology, ENT), dentists, and cognitive behavioral therapists.
Highlights of Our Training Program
The Mount Sinai Integrative Sleep Center treats the full range of sleep disorders, including the following conditions:
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
- Central Sleep Apnea
- Circadian Rhythm Disorders
- Insomnia
- Narcolepsy
- Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
- Parasomnias
Our sleep fellowship schedule is created monthly to tailor it towards the fellows interest and career goals. A pediatric sleep candidate would spend more time with our pediatric sleep faculty whereas a fellow with a career goal of becoming a sleep physician scientist would spend more time conducting clinical activities that are geared towards enhancing their research goals.
Our fellowship allows for plenty of time to reflect and read about sleep disorders topics based on clinical encounters as we limit exhaustive clinical schedules and provide protected time for research, clinical documentation and preparation of case conference presentations. The sleep fellowship PD meets with the sleep fellow every two months to tailor the schedule of rotations based on feedback from the fellow and to address any gaps in training. This allows our fellows to spend time with all the sleep faculty in our division thereby minimizing redundancy in learning experience. This also enriches the case mix that our fellows see. Sleep study reading is available via zoom currently and both in lab and home sleep studies are reviewed with various attendings in a structured format. The fellows have always met ACGME requirements with regards to number of sleep study interpretations and scoring, participation in lectures, quality improvement projects and other requirements. Samples of our tailored fellows schedule are provided on the program curriculum page.
