Program Signaling for the 2025 Gastroenterology Fellowship Match

Beginning in July 2025, the Gastroenterology Fellowship match will incorporate "Program Signaling," a new process allowing applicants to express their interest by designating up to five Gold Signals and ten Silver Signals to specific programs. As this is the inaugural year for this system in the 2025-2026 application cycle, we wish to provide insight into how our program will utilize these signals.

Our Vision: Cultivating Leaders in Gastroenterology and Hepatology

As detailed throughout this brochure, the Mount Sinai Hospital Gastroenterology Fellowship program is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of leaders in gastroenterology and hepatology. Our commitment begins with the comprehensive development of outstanding clinical acumen in all aspects of GI and hepatologic disease. We place significant emphasis on fostering a fellow's scholarly pursuits within diverse domains, including clinical, translational, or basic research, medical education, quality improvement, innovation and technology, epidemiology, and patient safety. For fellows with a focus on developing specialized clinical expertise, our program dedicates substantial time to cultivating these niche skills.

Reflecting on Your Aspirations

As you consider your application, we encourage you to thoughtfully reflect on your long-term career aspirations. Do you envision a career rooted in academic medicine, or one that is more clinically focused? We invite you to assess whether the structure and emphasis of our fellowship program align with your individual goals and will provide the ideal environment for your professional development.

The Ideal Candidate: Passion and Scholarly Drive

We seek applicants who demonstrate a profound passion and aptitude that extends beyond the fundamentals of clinical medicine. This may manifest as a deep interest in a specific clinical subspecialty or a strong drive for scholarly inquiry. We evaluate this through a comprehensive review of your engagement in relevant activities, the scholarly projects you have undertaken, and the insights shared by your mentors in their letters of recommendation.

Furthermore, fellows who thrive in our program are typically self-directed and flourish in a more autonomous learning environment. While a robust mentorship framework is in place to guide your progress, the immersive nature of the 18-month scholarly period necessitates a strong degree of intrinsic motivation to achieve your research or clinical focus goals. The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Mount Sinai Health System offers a wealth of unparalleled resources, and successful fellows are those who are highly motivated to leverage these opportunities to advance their objectives.

Our Approach to Program Signals

Drawing upon the experiences of other specialties that have previously adopted signaling, we anticipate that the majority of our interview invitations will be extended to applicants who have designated our program with a Gold or Silver signal. While we will reserve a limited number of interview slots for exceptional candidates who do not send a signal, we encourage interested applicants to utilize this feature. Please note that program signals will not be discussed during the interview process and will not be a significant factor in our final ranking decisions.
