Program Curriculum
As a cardiology fellow, you will have exposure to world-renowned experts, emerging therapeutics, cutting edge research, and outstanding educational training at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Here, you will enjoy extensive research opportunities and enjoy collaborating with our faculty across basic, translational, and clinical medicine arenas.
In addition, we offer our cardiology fellows:
- A core curriculum, structured didactic program, and international global health programs
- Unique mentoring guidance and networking opportunities
- Cardiology Chief's Service Rotation: Train and work side-by-side with Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Director of Mount Sinai Heart and Physician-in-Chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital
- Editing and research publishing: Work closely with Mount Sinai faculty who are editors of major heart journals, including: the Journal of American College of Cardiology (JACC), JACC Cardiovascular Imaging, and CardioSource WorldNews Interventions
Multi-Modality Conferences: Hear leading experts discuss the integration of state-of-the-art cardiac imaging techniques, diagnostics, and learn how to apply them in clinical practice.
Visiting Professor Lectures: Attend lectures by internationally recognized experts, who are invited to spend a full-day with our faculty and fellows
- "Controversies in Cardiology": Participate in panel discussions about critical topics in cardiology
- Research Opportunities: As a fellow, you have access to cutting-edge research with the Cardiovascular Research Center of Mount Sinai Heart.
Training Options
The first two years of the training program offer extensive exposure and experience in every aspect of cardiology including:
1. Critical care cardiology 2. Echocardiography 3. Nuclear cardiology 4. Advanced cardiac imaging including cardiac CT/MRI and PET imaging 5. Structural imaging for structural heart interventions 6. Interventional and structural heart disease 7. Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology service 8. Heart failure, VAD, and Transplant 9. Vascular disease 10. Consultative cardiology 11. Preventive cardiology 12. Genetics 13. Congenital heart disease 14. Cardiothoracic surgery
There is extensive mentorship throughout the three years. Within the first few months, faculty mentorship will be identified and arranged once fellows identify their potential career interest. Aside from the aforementioned mentorship, Doctors Goldman and Fuster have extensive interaction with fellows both on clinical rotations and informally throughout their training.
The third year of the program is personalized to the clinical and research interests of each individual fellow. This year is frequently integrated with their future career choice, particularly if the fellow will be continuing training in one of our advanced training subspecialty fellowships.
Fellows have the ability to pursue advanced training in various tracks:
1. Interventional Cardiology 2. Structural 3. Vascular Medicine 4. Electrophysiology 5. Advanced Cardiac Imaging (Cardiac CT, MRI, and PET) 6. Structural Imaging 7. Advanced Heart Failure, Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support 8. Cardiac Critical Care 9. Advanced clinical investigation and research: This includes courses in biostatistics and clinical trial design under joint supervision with Annetine Gelijns; Professor and Chair, Department of Population Health Science and Policy.
Year-by-Year Training
In Weeks
First Year Fellowship
Second Year Fellowship
Third Year Clinical Requirements
Fellows will have varied clinical rotation commitments based on the COCATS requirements for expected career tracks and board certifications. All fellows will have certain mandated rotations during third year (ie: 2 weeks of Cardiothoracic Surgery and 2 weeks of Senior Cardiac Intensive Care); however, a majority of this year is spent advancing their clinical and research experience in a chosen field within Cardiology. Of note, advanced research training is available and encouraged as a career endeavor for all of our fellows.
Imaging Pathways
1. General Imaging/Clinical: Career goals - to have broad training in imaging modalities with plans to build, primarily, an outpatient practice.
2. Advanced Echo: Career goals - to have advanced echo imaging training (3D, Structural, and Research focus).
3. *CT/MRI: Career goals - to receive broad training in multiple imaging modalities with plans for a fourth year in CT/MRI imaging.
Procedural Pathways
1. *Interventional/Structural: Career goals - to pursue additional training in interventional cardiology.
2. *Electrophysiology: Career goals - to have advanced training in electrophysiology
Advanced Clinical Pathways
1. *Advanced Heart Failure: Career goals - to pursue additional training in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology.
2. *Cardiac Critical Care: Career goals - to have advanced training in cardiac critical care.
3. *Adult Congenital: Career goals - to puruse advanced training in adult congenital heart disease.
Clinical Rotations
Our broad clinical rotations offer fellows the opportunity to work with subspecialty experts across The Mount Sinai Hospital. Each clinical rotation includes high volumes and complex cases, which provides for extensive educational, hands-on clinical training and encourages exploring research opportunities.
Cardiology Conferences
Advanced Fellowships
The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai offers competitive, in-depth, educational fellowship opportunities in all subspecialties of cardiology. Advanced training in a subspecialty of cardiology at The Mount Sinai Hospital gives fellows the opportunity to explore and learn from some of the world’s most leading experts with access to the latest cutting-edge cardiovascular medicine, complex patient cases, advanced translational research, and innovative clinical trials. Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging (CT/MRI) and Critical Care are also offered at Mount Sinai Hospital for interested Cardiovascular Fellows.
