A Message from the Program Directors
Dear Prospective Fellow:
Mount Sinai has been a leader in cardiovascular medicine for over half a century. Led by Dr. Valentin Fuster, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Deepak Bhatt, the Director of Mount Sinai Heart, and Dr. Samin Sharma, the Director of the Cardiovascular Clinical Institute, Mount Sinai cardiology exposes fellows to world-renowned experts in all aspects of cardiovascular medicine and surgery, conducts cutting-edge research, and allows for the application of the latest innovations in patient care. Training at Mount Sinai Hospital involves the latest technologies in disease prevention, multimodality imaging, interventional cardiology, structural heart disease, cardiac electrophysiology, advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplantation, vascular medicine, and congenital heart disease. The program is unique in blending this exposure at the tertiary health science center with the hands-on, mentored clinical training in a municipal hospital, the City Hospital Center at Elmhurst in Queens, a primary teaching hospital of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The “crown jewel” of the New York City public hospitals system serving the world’s most ethnically diverse community, Elmhurst gained national recognition as the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. In an historic pandemic, our fellows were front-line healthcare providers, fighting for the lives of patients. Our pride in these heroic fellows is obvious -- they are the strongest ambassadors for the program. We believe that the complementary training environments provided under the aegis of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the New York City Health & Hospitals system create unparalleled opportunities for learning by forging smart, motivated, caring physicians into outstanding clinical cardiologists best suited to meeting future challenges in cardiovascular care. The Mount Sinai Clinical Track Cardiology program took its present form under the leadership of Dr. Jonathan Halperin who continues to be a role model and mentor to fellow trainees in the program.
