Message from the Program Director
Welcome to the Dr. Henry D. Janowitz Division of Gastroenterology, home to a premier GI fellowship program in NYC dedicated to cultivating the next generation of leaders in academic gastroenterology. Our commitment to excellence in patient care, education, and research forms the bedrock of a training experience designed to provide our fellows with unparalleled skills and knowledge.
Our program builds its foundation on developing robust clinical acumen. The first eighteen months are dedicated to immersive inpatient and outpatient experiences across general GI, IBD, and Hepatology. This broad exposure is further enriched by formative rotations in Pancreaticobiliary diseases, GI Cancers, Nutrition, and Motility, ensuring comprehensive clinical mastery. Throughout, we emphasize the acquisition of core endoscopic skills, alongside fostering the cognitive understanding that underpins successful procedures.
Equally vital is the eighteen-month dedicated mentorship in scholarly pursuits, meticulously designed to hone the skills essential for a thriving academic career. We begin with a process of "guided exploration," encouraging fellows to delve into diverse areas within gastroenterology and hepatology and explore various forms of scholarship—be it basic, translational, or clinical research, quality improvement, patient safety, or medical education. With the close guidance of program leadership, first-year fellows assemble a mentorship team and craft a structured plan for their scholarly activity and clinical development.
We take immense pride in charting a unique path for each fellow, meticulously aligning with their individual goals, interests, strengths, and talents. Tremendous effort is invested in customizing every experience, often crafting novel opportunities that directly support a fellow's specific aspirations. Our fellows have consistently embraced these opportunities, from attending intensive research methodology courses and obtaining certifications in intestinal ultrasound to pursuing international electives and even pioneering integrative multidisciplinary fellowships. For fellows with a distinct passion and aptitude for research, we encourage them to pursue additional training through our T32 training program, "Training in Investigative Gastroenterology and Hepatology”
A true cornerstone of this fellowship is our exceptional faculty. Our full-time faculty boasts an incredibly diverse array of interests and expertise, and we collectively find immense joy in fostering the growth and development of each fellow. This is further strengthened by our uniquely close partnership with our 'voluntary faculty' in private practices, who provide invaluable clinical teaching and mentorship.
Thank you for your interest in our program. We invite you to explore further by reading our brochure, and we welcome any questions you may have.
